Properties of Titanium Dioxide

As white paint, titanium dioxide has already been widely applied in toothpaste, cosmetics, coating material and other industries. Usually, under ordinary temperature, properties of titanium dioxide are stable.

Chemical and physical properties of titanium dioxide are very stable in normal temperature. Titanium dioxide does not dissolve in acid, water and general organic solvent. Titanium dioxide even does not react with hydrogen peroxide, chlorine and hydrogen sulfide and other gases which have strong chemical reactivity. As a photocatalysis, titanium dioxide also has such advantages as durability, abrasion resistance, safe, economic, practical and others.

Titanium dioxide has three crystalline structures and they are rutile, anatase and brookite. Among them, rutile is the most stable crystal, anatase and brookite are able to convert into rutile structure at high temperature. And this reaction is irreversible.

As for the density of titanium dioxide, the density of anatase crystal form is 3.9g/cm3 and the density of rutile crystal form is 4.2g/cm3. Compared with other metallic oxide, the density of titanium dioxide is higher. At normal temperature, titanium dioxide is complete insulator. After being irradiating and being heated, titanium dioxide will become semiconductor.

When titanium dioxide comes across water, it will produce hydrophilic hydroxyl radical on the surface of titanium dioxide.
