The corrosion resistance of titanium material
Titanium is a kind of metal with strong passivation tendency, which can rapidly produce a layer of stable protective oxide film in the air or in oxidative or neutral aqueous solution. Even if the film is damaged for some reasons, it can quickly recover automatically. Therefore, titanium has excellent corrosion resistance in oxidizing and neutral medium.
Due to the huge passivation properties of titanium, in many cases, when it contact with different metals, it does not accelerate the corrosion, and it can accelerate the corrosion of dissimilar metals. For example, in the non oxidizing acid with low concentration, if Pb, Sn, Cu or Monel alloy contact with titanium and form the galvanic, the corrosion of these materials will be accelerated, but titanium can't be affected. In hydrochloric acid, when the titanium contacts with low carbon steel, titanium surface produces a new hydrogen that destroyed the titanium oxide film, so this not only causes the hydrogen embrittlement of titanium, but also accelerate the corrosion of titanium, which may be due to titanium has a high activity to hydrogen.
The iron content in titanium has effects on the corrosion resistance of some medium, the reason for iron increasing is often that the contamination iron filtered weld bead, so the iron content of the parts of weld bead is increased. At this time, the corrosion has the uneven nature.
In general, titanium won't have hole corrosion. Titanium also has anti corrosion and fatigue stability.
The crevice corrosion resistance performance of titanium is good, especially the Ti-0.3Mo-0.8Ni and Ti-0.2Pd alloy. Therefore, the Ti-0.3Mo-0.8Ni and Ti-0.2Pd alloys are widely used for the sealing surface material of container equipment, in order to solve the crevice corrosion problem of equipment sealing surface.
